Ornate Newari Peacock Windows — Architectural Masterpieces in Wood

The carved wooden windows of Kathmandu Valley are among the finest examples of woodworking art in Asia. The most famous is the Peacock Window of Bhaktapur — a 15th-century masterpiece that has become the symbol of Nepali woodcarving. Newari architects and woodcarvers developed an extraordinary tradition of ornate wooden windows, doors, and temple struts (tundal) that can be seen throughout the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur. Today, master carvers in Bhaktapur continue this tradition, creating both faithful reproductions of historical designs and contemporary interpretations for homes, hotels, restaurants, and collectors worldwide.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

Window frame carving begins with creating the structural frame from thick Sal wood planks. The decorative panels and grilles are carved separately from Sisau or Sal wood. Carvers work from traditional patterns — peacocks, dragons (makara), lotus flowers, mythological scenes — using a vast array of specialized chisels and gouges. The traditional Newari window features a central lattice (tikijhya) flanked by carved panels, topped with an ornate torana (decorative arch). Complex windows with multiple layers of carved and pierced panels can take a single artisan 2-4 months to complete. Finished pieces are assembled with traditional joinery (minimal use of nails) and finished with natural oils or lacquer.

Wooden Window Frames — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install Newari windows in a modern home?
Yes, many architects and interior designers incorporate Newari carved window frames into contemporary buildings. We can produce functional windows with weatherproofing, glass backing, and modern hardware, or purely decorative wall-mounted pieces. We work with architects to adapt traditional designs to modern specifications.
How large are the window frames?
Standard Newari windows range from 2x3 feet to 4x6 feet. We also produce miniature replicas (6-12 inches) for collectors and decorative display. For architectural installations, we can create windows of virtually any size — our largest commission was a 6x8 foot peacock window for a boutique hotel in Kathmandu.
