Why Source Handicrafts from Nepal?

Nepal is one of the world's richest sources of authentic handmade products, with centuries-old craft traditions and a thriving artisan community.

Fair Trade Practices

Our artisan partners receive fair wages that support their families and communities. Many workshops are run by women's cooperatives, providing economic independence and empowerment in rural Nepal. Every purchase supports sustainable livelihoods.

Unique Craftsmanship

Nepali handicrafts are made using techniques that cannot be replicated by machines — hand-hammered singing bowls, mineral-pigment thangka paintings, lost-wax cast bronze statues. Each piece is genuinely unique, with the subtle variations that prove authentic handwork.

Competitive Pricing

Direct sourcing from Kathmandu workshops eliminates multiple layers of middlemen. Combined with Nepal's competitive labor costs and trade preference programs (duty-free access to EU, US GSP), you get exceptional handmade products at prices that allow healthy retail margins.

Centuries-Old Traditions

Nepal's craft traditions span millennia — Patan's metalworkers have been casting bronze since the 3rd century, pashmina weaving dates to the 15th century, and Lokta papermaking has been documented for over 1,000 years. When you source from Nepal, you are connecting your customers to living history.

What Our Buyers Say

Trusted by boutique retailers, yoga studios, gift shops, and fair trade stores worldwide.

“Our store carries hand-carved Bhairav masks and wooden boxes from Nepal Wood Craft. Customers love the authentic craftsmanship — every piece is unique and you can see the hand tool marks that prove it is genuinely handmade. The masks are always conversation starters and they fly off the walls. Their fair trade practices align perfectly with our store's mission.”

“I incorporated Newari-style carved wooden window frames into a boutique hotel renovation project. Nepal Wood Craft produced six custom peacock windows to our exact specifications — the carving detail is museum quality. Installation was straightforward as they provided technical drawings and hardware specifications. The windows have become the most photographed feature of the hotel.”

“We stock carved wooden boxes and figurines from Nepal Wood Craft across our chain of 12 gift shops. The products are consistently well-made, attractively priced for our margin requirements, and the fumigation documentation is always correct — which matters for Australian customs. They handle all export paperwork professionally and shipments arrive on schedule.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to the most common questions about sourcing Nepali handicrafts for your business.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of wood are used for Nepali carvings?
The primary woods are Sal (Shorea robusta) — Nepal's most durable hardwood, naturally termite-resistant and ideal for structural and outdoor pieces; Sisau (Dalbergia sissoo) — a fine-grained rosewood perfect for detailed carving with a beautiful warm color; and Chilaune (Schima wallichii) — a lighter weight wood suitable for masks and larger decorative pieces. All our wood is legally sourced with proper documentation.
Do wooden products require fumigation for export?
Yes, all wooden products exported from Nepal require phytosanitary treatment — either heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation — to comply with international ISPM-15 regulations. We handle fumigation for every shipment and provide the required certificate. This treatment does not affect the appearance or structural integrity of the carvings.
What is the minimum order quantity?
MOQs vary by product: masks start at 20 pieces per design, boxes at 50 pieces, figurines at 25 pieces, and furniture at 5 pieces. Window frames and architectural pieces start at 3-5 pieces. For custom commissions, even single pieces are possible. We offer sample packs at retail pricing for first-time buyers.
How do you prevent wood from cracking in different climates?
All our timber is air-dried for 12-24 months before carving, reducing moisture content to 8-12% which is suitable for most international climates. After carving, pieces are finished with natural oils or lacquers that seal the wood against moisture absorption. For extremely dry climates (below 20% humidity), we can adjust the drying and finishing process to your destination's conditions.
Can you produce custom carvings from my designs?
Absolutely. Our master carvers can work from sketches, photographs, CAD files, or verbal descriptions. The process begins with a design consultation, followed by detailed drawings for your approval. For complex pieces, we may produce a small-scale prototype. Custom commissions range from small decorative items to large architectural installations.
