Hand-Carved Nepali Furniture — Where Tradition Meets Function

Nepali wooden furniture combines the ornate carving traditions of Kathmandu Valley's Newar artisans with functional design. Our craftsmen produce hand-carved tables, chairs, cabinets, bed frames, shelving units, and decorative furniture pieces in both traditional Newari styles and contemporary designs adapted for international markets. Each piece is made from sustainably sourced Nepali hardwoods — primarily Sal (extremely durable, termite-resistant) and Sisau (Nepali rosewood, beautiful grain and color). The furniture is built using traditional joinery techniques with minimal hardware, ensuring structural integrity and longevity.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

Furniture production begins with selecting well-seasoned timber (air-dried 12-24 months). The structural frame is built using traditional mortise-and-tenon, dovetail, and wooden-dowel joinery — techniques that create strong joints without relying on nails or screws. Decorative elements — carved panels, relief work, turned legs — are produced separately and integrated into the frame. Finishing involves multiple rounds of sanding, followed by natural oil or lacquer application. For export, all wood is fumigated and moisture content is verified to prevent warping in different climate zones.

Wooden Furniture — Frequently Asked Questions

Will Nepali wood furniture adapt to different climates?
Yes, when properly seasoned and finished. We ensure all timber is dried to 8-12% moisture content before production, which is suitable for most international climates. We apply moisture-barrier finishes (tung oil, lacquer) to prevent absorption. For very dry or very humid climates, we can adjust the moisture content and finishing specifications to your destination.
Can you produce furniture to my design specifications?
Absolutely. We regularly produce custom furniture from client blueprints, sketches, or reference photographs. Our craftsmen can adapt traditional Nepali carving styles to modern furniture designs. Provide dimensions, wood preference, finish, and reference images, and we will produce a detailed quote and timeline.
