Wooden Figurines & Statues

Hand-Carved Wooden Figurines — Nepali Artistry in Every Detail

Nepali wooden figurines encompass a rich variety of subjects — Buddha in meditation, Hindu deities, animals native to the Himalayas (snow leopard, red panda, yak, elephant), traditional Nepali figures (Kumari, musicians, farmers), and contemporary decorative carvings. Unlike the metal statues that Patan is famous for, wooden figurines offer a warmer, more organic aesthetic. Bhaktapur's carvers have a particular talent for capturing expression and movement in wood — their Buddha figures radiate serenity, their animal carvings seem ready to spring to life. Wooden figurines are popular in gift shops, home decor stores, and with collectors of Asian folk art.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

The carver begins with a seasoned wood block selected for the right grain orientation. The rough shape is cut with saws and adzes, then progressively refined with chisels and gouges. For detailed work — facial expressions, finger details, fabric folds — carvers use extremely fine tools, sometimes working under magnification. The finished carving is sanded to a silk-smooth finish and treated with natural oil or wax that brings out the wood's natural color and grain. Painted figurines receive a base coat, hand-painted details, and a protective clear coat.

Wooden Figurines & Statues — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular wood for figurines?
Sisau (Nepali rosewood) is the most popular — its fine grain holds incredible detail, and its warm reddish-brown color is beautiful with a natural oil finish. For painted figurines, Chilaune wood is preferred because its lighter color provides a better base for paint.
Do you produce seasonal items like nativity sets?
Yes, hand-carved wooden nativity sets are one of our top seasonal products. We produce sets ranging from simple 3-piece sets to elaborate 15+ piece collections. These sell well in European and American gift shops. Order by July-August for Christmas delivery.
